Annulment of Marriage
Declaring a marriage void or voidable on grounds recognised by law.
A marriage may be void from the start, for example a bigamous marriage, or voidable on grounds such as consent obtained by force or fraud, or non-consummation (Sections 11 and 12 of the Hindu Marriage Act). An annulment decree declares that a valid marriage never existed, which differs in effect from divorce.
